Dibakar Banerjee left on Tuesday for the Melbourne International Film Festival where Love Sex Aur Dhokha is being screened in a special section called ‘Not Quite Hollywood’, he regrets not having his producer Ekta Kapoor along. Immersed in the release of her new film Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Ekta has regrettably given the a honour a miss.
But Dibakar has a very special gift for his producer. A new love story written specially for Ekta’s Balaji Films, presented to her as a belated birthday present (Ekta turned a year older on June 7).
Irresistible is how Dibakar Banerjee describes his collaboration with Ekta Kapoor. After the luminously lauded LSD, the unlikely twosome Dibakar and Ekta are all set to come together again for what promises to be the most intense love story of 2011.
At home with his new adoptive daughter Ira, Dibakar , now in domesticated and mellow frame of mind has been quietly penning the love story for his demanding producer.
Says Dibakar, “See, Ekta is dream producer. When we came together for LSD, we never thought we’d be able to work so well together. She gave me a free rein. I was in a totally happy frame of mind making LSD. Even if its impact was not what it is, I’d have still gone back to Ekta to make a film.”
Ekta had a pre-condition for Dibakar. “She wanted me to return to her only when I’ve a trueblue love story to make.”
The love story will go on the floors in the second-half of 2011. For now Dibakar watches LSD acquire a life of its own. He leaves for Melbourne where LSD is being screened along with Aamir Khan’s Peepli Live and Abhishek Choubey’s Ishqiya in the ‘Not Quite Bollywood’ section.
Says the enthused director, “It is quite a triumph for Indian cinema to have a different kind of films being recognized. But we have a long struggle ahead.”
Dibakar and LSD’s associate producer Priya Aven would also be participating in a discussion on digital cinema.
And if you think Dibakar’s trip to Melbourne is only about he business of cinema, he’s also taking his wife and daughter Ira to Melbourne. “If I don’t find ways of spending time with Ira, I’d soon be left with no time for her,” grumbles dad Dibakar.

As the gangster movie Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai hits theatres on July 30, the audience will also get to see a glimpse of Aakrosh directed by Priyadarshan.

The theatrical promo of the film Aakrosh will be shown on the same day along with OUATIM. Aakrosh is a hard-hitting film about love across caste barriers and honour killing set in Bihar.

Starring Ajay Devgn, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Raima Sen, Amita Pathak, and Paresh Rawal, the movie is produced by Kumar Mangat under the banner of ‘Big Screen Entertainer’.

The soundtrack of the movie has been composed by Pritam and the lyricist is Irshad Kamil.

The film is slated for release on October 1, 2010.

The buzz about Milan Luthria’s Haji Mastan bio-pic Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai is that Amitabh Bachchan makes a guest appearance in a very unexpected way.

When asked about the Bachchan presence in the film, director Milan Luthria says, “I don’t know where you heard this. But it’s true. In the course of the film Ajay’s character’s girlfriend played by Kangna Ranaut mentions to him that there should be a film made on his life. To this Ajay replies, ‘Now you want me to turn into an actor?’ Kangna then tells Ajay about this young intense actor named ‘Ami’ who is just right to play Haji Mastan.”

The Big B had played Haji Mastan in Yash Chopra’s Deewaar which was released in 1975. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai is set in the 1970s. Interestingly Devgn, who plays Mastan in Milan Luthria’s film was often compared to the Big B when he started his career, even by Jaya Bachchan.

Luthria says the Big B is not mentioned by name.

Says the director, “I’d never make any reference to Mr. Bachchan that can be considered even remotely disrespectful. But yes, Kangna refers to him as ‘the young intense actor’.

Besides the fact that they both play characters inspired by the same real-life character, the interesting part of the Bachchan reference in Devgn’s context is that the younger actor has perpetually been compared with the Big B’s for the dark and brooding intensity.

In fact, Jaya Bachchan had long ago singled out Devgn as the successor to her husband.

Rumours seem to be following Vivek Oberoi month after month. Even as the actor is neck deep into working with Ram Gopal Varma and ensuring that his next release Rakta Charitra gets just the right release and promotion, there have been new found rumours around him making a big splash on TV. Believe it or not but after the name Shah Rukh Khan was spoken about in hush hush tone, the newest entrant is Vivek Oberoi who has apparently been approached to host the new season of Big Boss.

“Of late there has been some buzz surrounding how Vivek too has come close to biting the television bug. Earlier there were talks about being approached to participate in the new season of ‘Swayamvar’ after Rakhi Sawant and Rahul Mahajan. Now there is a buzz in the air that he could well be hosting the new season of ‘Big Boss’ too as well”, says an insider from the television industry who wished to be unnamed.

However, the truth is that as of now Vivek has no plan of doing Big Boss or any other television show.

While Vivek was unavailable for comment, a source close to him said, “What? Vivek is hosting ‘Big Boss’? Now that’s some news because Vivek is definitely not doing the show. Yes, there have been some murmurs around him hosting the show but none of that is true.”

There can’t be any smoke without fire though. It is hard to imagine that the news would have originated out of nowhere.

“Well, one can’t be too sure”, says the source in a careful tone, “However, it can be stated with confidence that Vivek is not even remotely contemplating getting into television. He has things to look forward to in the world of movies. There is Rakta Charitra getting ready for release. Also, there is a film happening with Mani Ratnam. He would like to totally concentrate on that rather than getting his attention diverted to other mediums.”

Well, for all the late night television addicts out there who could have hoped for Vivek to be entering their living rooms on a daily basis and bring to fore the inside gossips of the ‘Big Boss’ inmates, there is going to be some wait for sure.
